“I went to my first convention two years back. I figured that I saved enough money from reading the Q&A forum on the MrLandlord website to pay for the convention.
Turns out it was worth the trip even if I had not learned from the forum. My wife agrees with me so much that when I told her about the email yesterday (announcing the convention) she went ahead and reserved our sleeping rooms. We are about an hour away, but staying on site for the before and after chats is worth not driving to us.

“I have attended at least 4 conventions since my first one in 2011. I have always learned more from talking with other landlords than by any other means. Roundtable conversations are the holy grail too. Plus, attending a convention is 10 times better than anything that is offered for free on the forum. The forum gives you the sugar coated version of landlording but if you want the actual meat and potatoes, you have to be willing to attend a convention and introduce yourself to other landlords. All landlords (who attend) seem to love to talk shop too! And it is always nice to be in a place where no one is going to call you a … slumlord!”

“We were at the Mr. Landlord Convention! IT WAS GREAT!!!!!!!!!Been a landlord for 30 years and still many things to learn and great speakers.I have got to meet a lot of great people and the information I’ve learned will pay dividends many times what I’ve spent coming here. Think of it like this. What is your cheapest rental? What you spend coming and buying a program is probably only 1-3 months rent from your lowest price unit. “This year for me I was going more for motivation. Something about hanging out, sharing, and learning in the special ambience that Jeffrey creates, with 200 other likeminded entrepreneurs does something to the mind. I had taken 3 years off from the conventions (and my business) and I shouldn’t have. Something about my mindset got messed up during the lockdown and I even went and bought a big white work van and have all my tools and supplies sorted in it so I can do maintenance and service calls.
#1) I wanted to complain about how all my “work” sucks, in fact I was complaining about my problems to Mike on Wednesday and it hit me that they were all problems I created! (Thanks Mike!) There is something about hearing yourself speak that you don’t get staying at home.
#2) I thought I was done and was at the point of “enough” and could just cruise to retirement and had just enough to survive and die broke. BUT then we got the Legacy talk. Got to say, in the back of my head I thought of the tenants as my legacy and the fact is NONE of them would come to my funeral (well maybe 1 or 2 would show) Thank you Mary Hart for the Mindset shift. Then we had Mr. Standfield repeating into our minds that we were not done. We can do more and do better and help others. I decided I am not done.
#3) I mentioned to Jeffrey on Wednesday after the meet and greet that I needed to get motivation from this convention…He went out of his way to MAKE SURE I got what I needed. Similar to the Nick Koon award that was presented, I can Honestly say I would not be where I am in this business without Jeffrey’s leadership and the 2008 Las Vegas MrLandlord convention and all the MrLandlord Conventions I was able to make it to since. Jeffrey has never invited me to stay at his home BUT he has invited me every year to vacation with him and his family and I think I will try to get on the standby list for the Retreat for this coming year! “3 days was full of great content from morning till night. I literally got useful, pertinent, and informative information from just about all the speakers (Brad 20k, Mary Hart, Charles Dobens, etc), especially the Professor himself. It is always beneficial to listen-up when the Professor is on a roll (right, Mr. Lee?!) I got a lot out of Lee Philips’ seminar on Tax Strategies and also in the round tables he hosted during the Brainstorming and Exchange Sessions. Lee is a must have. (Jeff, maybe bring him to Punta Cana this coming year??).
George Antone’s session on how using leverage as an inflation hedge while also growing your wealth was great too. In fact, I plowed through a good deal of his book that was given out (at no extra charge too) during my flight back to MA. That book expanded on what he said during his session, which made me change the way I will go about my upcoming deals that will increase their returns exponentially (to say the least!!). Sidenote: it was great meeting everyone and to be able to put faces with the names. Another job well done Jeff and Dot…Great vibe, great people, great content! See you in Punta Cana!”

“You will get more info then you can implement but I think the purpose is to get you thinking that 1) you can succeed, 2) you can improve the way you are doing things, and 3) maybe what you thought you should do isn’t the best way. Oh also motivate you to reach your goals (and have goals) even if you are scared, tentative, unsure, confused, etc…
The biggest benefit I see is the ability to see lots of different ways to succeed – SFH, multiplexes, storage buildings, flips, rent to own, hard money lending, etc. Then you try and figure out what works for your local area and your skill set. Maybe you only see one way of doing things and then you meet a few people and hear a few lectures and you can go off in a better direction… it makes you think and motivates you to be independent. You are taking charge of your life and no matter what your day job throws at you or the stock market does, you have control of your nest egg business which will make you independent (someday).” David. “If I had to start over again as a landlord… I think I would avoid most landlords. This would include meetings where landlords gather. Some of the worst advice came from landlords. “Awesome convention!! First class! Great hotel. The VIP meal plan is VIP. My first Mr. Landlord convention and definitely not the last. Met Jeffrey at the Long Beach AOA convention and have been thinking of coming to the convention which coincided with my shopping center convention in Las Vegas (this week). I really appreciate everyone being in one large room, not having to make a decision between this speaker or that one simultaneously. “The convention this year was great. All the speakers addressed topics pertinent to today’s real estate environment. Heard lots of suggestion and hope to implement some new procedures to improve cash flow. The attendance appeared very high. Not sure if that’s because St Louis allows so many to drive here or if more and more investors are understanding that NOW is the time to be buying and making money in real estate. Hope St Louis is a repeat for the 2012 convention.
Met with lots of old friends from various parts of the country. It’s so nice to be able to place a face with a handle on the Q&A for those who do post here. My favorite aspect of the convention is the people interaction. Interactions include round tables to allow everyone to discuss what’s on their mind, dinners with others, golfing, or just sitting in the bar. You just can’t get the face time on the computer or phone or even video.
